German Immigration to Brazil Period from 1824 to 1830 – Project 2017-2024

German Immigration to Brazil Period from 1824 to 1830 – Project 2017-2024

(Using Google Translator. Sorry for any errors.)

The period from 1824 to 1830 is considered the official beginning of German Immigration in Brazil.

In a work started in 2017 I started researching my ancestors (Feyh/Fey family) and ended up writing a book that deals with ships and passengers from this period.
The motivation for writing the book was due to the fact that there was a lot of mismatched information about both the ships and the passengers of the book.

In these 7 years of the period mentioned there was an initial estimate that 7,000 German immigrants came to Brazil through approximately 35 sailboats.

These immigrants included soldiers and settlers.

The settlers were usually also artisans in a particular specialty, which helped them in surviving themselves and their families.

In turn, the soldiers, after being released from the imperial army, were entitled to a property in Brazil, and many remained here helping in the colonization of the new country.

Regarding the book cited, in the update of 11/15/2019 I reached a number between 10,576 and 10,655 immigrants (including settlers and soldiers). The ships reached a number of 41 sailboats.

At the beginning of 2020 we launched the third edition of the book, with a series of inserts of news and minor corrections.

The book, both in print and electronic version (e-book) is a great research tool for these immigrants, and can search by year, ship and surname of immigrants (as an example).

The information in this book is available at this link German Immigration to Brazil: Ships and Passengers Years 1824 to 1830 3nd Edition (first revision jan 2021).

From 2020 we will concentrate research and writing in 3 basic books, which are an option for those who do not wish to purchase the full version (years 1824 to 1830):

  • German Immigration to Brazil: Ships and Passengers Years 1824 and 1825 2a ed jan 2021
  • German Immigration to Brazil: Ships and Passengers Years 1826 and 1827 1a ed. (2a ed jun 2021)
  • German Immigration to Brazil: Ships and Passengers Years 1827 to 1830 1a ed. (2a ed. nov 2021)

With this we believe we can meet the interest of the reader in a specific period, also reducing the acquisition cost.

The other editions (exclusively for the state of Rio Grande do Sul) will be discontinued.

Any input is welcome.

Thank you in advance for submitting books on the subject and for submitting public documents and articles in the public domain.

The amount collected in book sales is being used to acquire a new bibliography, which has enabled the constant updating of the book in these almost 3 years of research started.

Schiff Helena Maria

Schiff Helena Maria

(Google translator used – sorry for any mistake!))

Ship Helena and Maria

Ship Helena Maria

This ship sailed from the port of Texel in Amsterdam / Holland on 06/01/1828.

He was not very lucky because he suffered serious breakdowns in the North Sea from 12 to 13 January 1828.

He was rescued by an English boat and taken to Falmouth (England).

The vessel can no longer conduct transatlantic voyages having been sold in Falmouth.

The castaways stayed in Falmouth waiting for help for almost a year.

One question remain: What would be the original passengers of Helena and Maria (Helena Maria)?

The oral and written tradition of the German Immigration in Rio Grande do Sul mentioned this ship as “Cäcilia”.

More recently a new version appeared, where it is said that in reality this ship “Cäcilia” did not exist and its name was used for some unknown reason, because its real name was Helena Maria.

The truth is that many of the shipwrecked Helena Maria (Càcilia) came in 1829 to Brazil aboard the James Laing Ship (see the list of passengers in the corresponding page on the blog homepage).

During the year 2018 we received confirmation that most of the passengers on the ship named “Cäcilia” were in fact in the Helena Maria. Check out more information on the free article mentioned below, Helena Maria’s passenger list and the book published on the subject in 2019.
